Start a new document, complete Fill document prompt, choose a mode under Generate Headings, and click Start Writing. Jenni generates the title and inserts the headings directly into the editor.

When you start a new document, Jenni can turn a document prompt into a generated title and heading structure. The headings are inserted directly into the editor so you can begin writing and revise the structure in place.

Heading Modes

The Generate Headings step offers three modes:

Select the mode before you click Start Writing.

Prompt Strength Indicator

A strength meter and character counter appear below the document prompt. Add enough detail for Jenni to identify the topic, document type, scope, and intended direction. The prompt can contain up to 5,000 characters.

Generate Headings for a New Document

Creating an Outline

Start a new document.
Open Fill document prompt and describe what you want to write.
Click Next and review the citation settings if needed.
Open Generate Headings and choose No Headings, Standard headings, or Smart headings.
Click Start Writing.

Jenni generates the document title and inserts the selected heading structure directly into the document editor. Body paragraphs are not generated. Generated H2 and H3 headings can include Section Prompt guidance.

Editing the Generated Structure

The generated title and headings appear in the editor. Edit, add, remove, or reorganize them there just like other document content.

Generated Section Prompts

Generated structures can include concise researcher-note bullets for each section. They focus on what to cover rather than reading like full descriptive sentences. Open Prompts in the editor to review, rewrite, or remove them. AI Autocomplete and AI Editing use the prompts attached to the current heading and its parent headings.

While Jenni Generates the Structure

After you click Start Writing, the new-document setup changes to a ghost outline with status messages while Jenni analyzes your prompt. The editor stays read-only until generation finishes. The title may appear first; Jenni then reveals the completed heading structure together.

After inserting the headings, Jenni refines your setup prompt into concise whole-document guidance. It keeps the topic, tone, audience, academic level, and writing style while leaving section-specific guidance in Section Prompts and citation requirements in document settings. If your prompt names a citation style or citation filters, Jenni applies those settings in the background while generating the outline. If you edit the prompt while the outline is generating, your edit is preserved.

Troubleshooting

The headings are not generating

Make sure the document prompt is not empty. If the generated structure is too broad, add the document type, topic, scope, audience, or argument to the prompt and start a new document.

The generated outline does not match my topic

Use Smart headings when you want Jenni to determine the structure from your prompt. After generation, revise the headings directly in the editor.

Language

Jenni automatically adapts to the language of your document prompt. Write the prompt in another language and Jenni generates the title and headings in that language.

Tips

Be specific with your prompt. Include the subject, document type, scope, and angle when possible.
Use Smart headings for unfamiliar topics. This gives Jenni more flexibility to choose the structure.
Treat the generated headings as a starting point. Revise them in the editor to match your argument and voice.
