Section Prompts

The Prompts panel contains a whole-document prompt and notes attached to individual headings. Jenni uses the document prompt throughout the draft and adds the matching heading prompts when Autocomplete or AI Editing runs inside a section.

When to Use Section Prompts

Use Section Prompts when different parts of the same document need different guidance:

• Tell the literature review which debate or gap to focus on
• Ask the methods section to keep a specific structure
• Set a tone for the discussion section
• Remind Jenni to use or avoid specific terms, claims, or sources

Section Prompts work with headings. If your document has no headings, add headings first.

Opening Section Prompts

Desktop

Click Prompts near the top-left of the editor. The panel starts with Document prompt, followed by your document headings. Click a row to open its prompt field. Jenni remembers whether the desktop panel was open or closed when you reload.

Mobile

When no text is selected, tap the Prompts button in the floating toolbar. Section Prompts open as a drawer.

Adding Guidance to a Section

1. Open Prompts.
2. Choose a heading.
3. Add notes for that section, such as the argument, tone, constraints, or points to cover.
4. Return to the editor and write inside that section.

Jenni saves the prompt with the heading. Prompts on parent headings also apply to nested subsections, so broad guidance can sit on an H1 or H2 while narrower instructions sit on child headings. Structures created through Generate Headings can include one to three prompt bullets for each generated H2 and H3.

Document and Section Prompt fields allow up to 5,000 characters. A character counter appears as you approach the limit.

Adding Whole-Document Guidance

Open Prompts, expand Document prompt, and describe guidance that should apply throughout the document, such as its topic, purpose, audience, tone, or overall constraints. The document prompt is available even when the document has no headings.

The document prompt does not have section-only controls such as Configure context or Generate. Use heading prompts when guidance or source choices should apply to one section.

Choosing Sources for a Section

Inside an expanded heading prompt, click Configure context to control which research Autocomplete uses for that section. The control opens a popover on desktop and a second bottom sheet over the Section Prompts drawer on mobile. You can:

• Pin one or more PDFs from your Library
• Select one Library collection
• Combine selected PDFs with a collection
• Turn on Disable sources to generate without retrieving or inserting citations

Selected sources and collections appear as pills inside Configure context. Remove a pill to stop using it, or click a source pill to preview the PDF. After you make a selection, the button summarizes the number of sources and collections. When source use is turned off, it shows Sources disabled.

Heading-level source choices override the document’s source settings for that section. If you do not select section sources, Jenni uses the document’s Library and external-source settings. Source choices apply to that heading only and do not inherit into nested subsection headings; prompt text still inherits from parent headings as described above.

How Jenni Uses Section Prompts

Section Prompts guide:

• Autocomplete: Suggestions and citation retrieval use prompts from the current heading and parent headings, ordered from broadest to narrowest.
• AI Editing: When selected text is inside a prompted section, the edit request includes that section guidance.

Section Prompts do not replace your custom AI Edit instruction. Jenni applies the section guidance alongside your visible instruction.

Remembering Guided Autocomplete Directions

When you type a direction in Guided Autocomplete, Jenni can recognize durable guidance and decide whether it belongs in the active Section Prompt or the whole-document prompt. Written feedback submitted with a negative Autocomplete rating can update the same guidance and citation settings. On desktop, section-level updates open the Prompts panel and type the remembered instruction into view; document-level updates appear in Document prompt. On mobile, Jenni saves updates without opening the drawer.

Jenni does not update Section Prompts when you choose a preset direction. If you edit the prompt yourself while a suggestion is generating, your manual edit takes priority.

Reviewing Generated Prompts

After inserting a generated outline, open Prompts to inspect the prompt bullets attached to each heading. Edit them like any manually created Section Prompt, or remove bullets that do not fit your plan.

Generating from a Section

In the Section Prompts panel, open a heading and click Generate. Jenni moves the cursor into that section and writes a researched suggestion using the heading prompt, its parent prompts, and the section’s source choices. The button shows a spinner while Jenni generates; wait for that generation to finish before starting another section.

If the section already has text, Jenni generates at the end of the section’s current paragraph. If the section is empty, Jenni creates a paragraph inside that heading before generating. On mobile, the drawer closes after generation starts.

Best Practices

• Use headings that describe the real structure of the paper.
• Keep prompts short: one to three sentences is usually enough.
• Put broad instructions on parent headings and specific instructions on child headings.
• Include constraints directly, such as “do not introduce new sources” or “focus on limitations of the sample.”
• Update prompts when the section’s purpose changes.

Troubleshooting

The Prompts button is not visible. Finish or skip the new-document setup first. On mobile, the button appears when no text is selected. After setup is dismissed, Prompts remains available even in a blank document.

No headings appear in the panel. Add headings to the document. Section Prompts attach to headings only.

Autocomplete is not following the prompt. Place your cursor inside the section that has the prompt, or click Generate from that section in the panel. Parent heading prompts apply to nested sections, but prompts from unrelated sections do not.

AI Editing is not following the prompt. Select text inside the prompted section before running AI Edit. Section Prompts are included as context, but your AI Edit command still controls the specific edit.
